On March 21, 2023, the 2023 LCOS Display Industry Summit Forum was held in Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province. The event was hosted by the China Video Industry Association, along with its Laser Display, Projection Display, and Public Information Display branches, and organized by XDMicro (Zhongshan) Optoelectronic Semiconductor Co., Ltd.

The forum brought together nearly 300 participants, including representatives from upstream and downstream industry chains, academic experts, media, and leading companies in smart projection, automotive displays, the Metaverse, and industrial applications. Representatives from LG (South Korea) were also in attendance. Participants explored the applications, development, and future prospects of LCOS display technology across multiple industries.

XDMicro, the event's organizer, showcased its LCOS chip solutions and product demonstrations, with the domestic premiere of its 4K ultra-high-definition LCOS laser projection standing out as a key highlight and earning widespread praise from attendees.

Mr. Chen Shisheng delivered the opening speech. He emphasized that the new display industry is a state-supported strategic sector, increasingly vital amid rapid IT progress and industrial transformation. LCOS chips, with advantages such as miniaturization, high resolution, and cost efficiency, have reached a mature industrial foundation. He praised XDMicro for achieving mass production capacity in 2023, ensuring domestic supply for LCOS microdisplay chips and strengthening China's innovation capabilities.

Mr. Hao Yabin described China's LCOS display industry as both a cradle of original technology and a global leader in display innovation. He highlighted LCOS’s strengths—superior image quality, high resolution, fast response, low power consumption, and compact size—which make it well-suited for applications such as smart projection, AR-HUD, AR/MR headsets, 3D printing, and optical communications. Hao also envisioned the future of display technology as increasingly diverse, immersive, and boundaryless, positioning LCOS as a pivotal driver of high-quality growth in the global display industry.

Mr. Luo Yuhang welcomed attendees on behalf of the Zhongshan Municipal Government. Highlighting Zhongshan's pioneering spirit as the hometown of Sun Yat-sen, he invited experts and R&D teams to drive innovation in the city, pledging robust government support and a vibrant innovation ecosystem to foster mutually beneficial partnerships across the world-class Bay Area.

Dr. Daniel Wong emphasized that advancing the LCOS industry cannot rely solely on a handful of suppliers. He noted that optoelectronic semiconductor chips are a high-investment sector that requires collaboration across the entire industry chain. Dr. Huang expressed confidence that stronger partner support will accelerate LCOS industrialization and reaffirmed XDMicro's commitment to expanding partnerships and providing strategic support.


A congratulatory video from Academician Xu Zuyan (CAE Member) reviewed the history of display technology and highlighted laser display as the next-generation mainstream, with LCOS laser display as a powerful technology combination. Xu emphasized the importance of LCOS localization and wished the event success.

Zhong Qiang, Secretary General of the Laser Display Industry Branch, outlined the progress of the laser display industry, highlighting China's growing leadership and the opportunity to strengthen its position in global technology. He emphasized that LCOS solutions are crucial for achieving higher native resolution, enhancing laser display performance, and enabling next-generation holographic displays. At the same time, he noted that the laser display industry chain still needs development, and advancing the domestic display chip industry will play a key role. LCOS technology also facilitates phase-type light processing, supporting the implementation of next-generation digital holographic display systems.

Ms. Zhu Yuanyuan analyzed the global and Chinese projection markets, reporting 17.83 million units shipped worldwide in 2022, a 15% year-on-year increase, with China accounting for 42.8% of the market. She projected continued growth at a 10.3% CAGR from 2021 to 2026 and highlighted LCOS technology's competitive potential compared with DLP. With advantages in resolution and flexible system integration, LCOS is poised to become a leading projection technology. RUNTO expects both the global and Chinese projection markets to maintain strong growth in the coming years.

Mr. Zhang Tao shared insights on the application of LCOS in virtual display technology from an industrial perspective. He noted that LCOS offers inherent advantages for the virtual reality industry, with solutions available for consumer, industrial, and automotive-grade PGUs. Increasingly, device manufacturers and end-user applications are adopting LCOS technology to promote independence and control within the industry. As a result, LCOS is expected to play an increasingly important role in the virtual display sector.

Mr. Xu Weijun noted that, alongside the rapid growth of the Metaverse, the AR/MR industry has been expanding rapidly. As an imaging chip, LCOS is widely used in the XR field, playing a crucial role in advancing Metaverse development, particularly in XR hardware innovation.

Dr. Hiap Ong also participated in the conference, offering an optimistic outlook on the future of LCOS. He discussed its potential in terms of vision, implementation, and expansion, and elaborated on how LCOS achieves its goals through innovations in liquid crystal materials and manufacturing processes.



Zhan Shengxiong shared insights on the basic architecture, design principles, key components, and overall controllability of the LCOS optical system supply chain from an optical systems perspective.

Chen Shunping, Director of Luminas Optoelectronics Co., Ltd., outlined the roadmap for high-lumen-density LEDs in projection displays and discussed collaboration with LCOS applications to align with market demand and explore new development directions.

Wu Weigao, Marketing Director of Zhongshan United Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd., highlighted the critical applications of optical core technology in projection imaging and the company’s mature capabilities across various imaging technologies, including LCOS.

Mr. Zhu Songwen from the Investment Promotion Office of Zhongshan Torch Development Zone welcomed enterprises to Zhongshan to foster collaboration and witness the development of the Greater Bay Area.

Following the industry presentations, Zhang Wenda, Senior Director of SEMI China, hosted a roundtable discussion with Dr. Yang Weiliang (CEO of Guangjing Group), Dong Min (Deputy Secretary General of China Electronic Video Industry Association), Zhang Mengyao (co-founder of Beijing Sunlight Technology), Tan Zhuorong (Senior Manager, Osram Marketing), and Shi Baohua (Senior Vice President, XDMicro). Participants expressed a positive outlook on LCOS's development, emphasizing its crucial role in the future of the display industry. They also highlighted that the mass production of LCOS will significantly advance the localization of Chinese chips and strengthen domestic innovation.
